DIARIO DI UN VIAGGIO IN TERRA SANTA

Legnago – Betlemme
Riceviamo da Legnago.
Dear friends,
Some of the teachers at Don Middle Bosco School in Porto di Legnago (Verona) together with some of the children’s parents, had the opportunity to leave for a short time pilgrimage to Jerusalem. By that time we have been guests of the school with which we are corresponding , that is the “SOS Children Village of Bethlehem” .It is a private, international organization founded by a Swiss benefactor and owns other similar organisations spread all over the world.
Since we arrived, the headmistress, some of the teachers, such as the English teacher as Referent point for the project “Bridges for peace”. The meeting has been really fruitful and we could talk about our schools and our students.
Their story takes its origins from a place whose aim was to host both orphans or abandoned children.
Nowadays, on the other hand, the school is attended by 400 Palestinian children; some of them live in the Institute itself, as they come from poor families, some others go back home as soon as the lessons are finished.
Even though the school environment is pretty poor, the children attending this school are quite a lot and this reveals it gives great importance to the students education and well-being, as you can perceive from the comfortable and welcoming environment .
After that, we visited the school and, as soon as the youngest children realised that one of our colleagues was taking photos , they immediately run towards him smiling in order to be photographed .In the school courtyard, there was a group of students doing their P.E. lesson and we realised that they have the same habits we have in our country. The children wear a tracksuit and play volleyball or football .
We were really impressed , as the children could follow the rules though the weather was so hot (about 30° degrees).
We also met the older students, who take part in the Project “Bridges for Peace”. We took advantage of such opportunity to bring a small notebook created by our students that contained their photos, some letters and a description of our school.
One of the things that really struck us was their strong wish to come and visit us to Italy. Unfortunately, it will be really difficult to make their wish come true , if we consider the hard political situation , as they live in Bethlehem . We must admit that families would have been really glad to give accommodation to those children.
Once we arrived in Italy, we told our students about the this experience and we helped them to think about the opportunity they have to deepen such a rare and unique relationship with children, whose way of life is completely different from ours, but whose emotions and feelings are the same as ours as well as the curiosity and will to face life events .
This was an occasion, especially for us who are adults, to get in touch with other people who look after children and compare the way we act for their education. Such experience has been really exciting and is a sign that the commitment with good actions is something you can share with anyone else. In fact, we represent a Catholic private school, whose teachers are laics but we do agree about the way we take care of children with another school , which only apparently looks different from ours. Both schools are private and so the economic expense can occur thanks to the support and help of what we call “ Providence” and what they call “Benefactors”.

Carissimi amici,
dal l’11 al 15 marzo alcuni di noi, docenti e genitori della scuola media Don Bosco di Porto di Legnago (VR), hanno avuto l’occasione di fare un breve pellegrinaggio in Terra Santa. In quest’occasione una mattina siamo stati ospiti della scuola con cui corrispondiamo la SOS Children Village di Betlemme. E’ una realtà internazionale privata fondata da un benefattore svizzero e conta altre realtà sparse in tutto il mondo.
Al nostro arrivo ci aspettavano la dirigente, alcuni insegnanti fra cui quella di inglese che segue il progetto Ponti per la Pace. L’incontro è stato molto cordiale e abbiamo potuto raccontarci di come sono le nostre scuole e i nostri ragazzi.
La loro storia nasce come un luogo di accoglienza per bambini orfani o abbandonati.
Oggi invece, la scuola è frequentata da 400 ragazzi palestinesi; alcuni vivono presso l’istituto in quanto provengono da famiglie in difficoltà, mentre altri al termine delle lezioni tornano alle loro famiglie.
Pur essendo inserita in un contesto di povertà, la scuola ha molti iscritti segno di un lavoro di qualità e attento alla persona, come mostra anche l’ambiente semplice ma accogliente.
In seguito ci hanno accompagnato a visitare la scuola e quando i bambini più piccoli hanno visto un nostro collega con la macchina fotografica l’hanno assalito e regalavano sorrisi per farsi fotografare. Nel piazzale della scuola c’era un gruppo di ragazzi che faceva educazione fisica e la lezione non è diversa dalle nostre, tuta e pallone e via. I ragazzi eseguivano le indicazioni nonostante i 30 gradi e la divisa a maniche lunghe.
Abbiamo anche incontrato i ragazzi più grandi che partecipano a Ponti per la Pace. Abbiamo usato questa occasione per portargli un piccolo quaderno fatto dai nostri ragazzi che conteneva le loro foto, alcune lettere e una descrizione della nostra scuola.
Una cosa che ci ha colpiti, anche se magari un po’ scontata, è stato il loro desiderio di voler venire in Italia. Visto che si tratta di bambini che vivono a Betlemme e vista la situazione politica sarà un po’ difficile , anche se le nostre famiglie sarebbero state molto contente di ospitarli.
Una volta rientrati in Italia abbiamo raccontato, con foto e aneddoti, di questa esperienza ai nostri ragazzi facendoli riflettere sull’opportunità unica e rara che hanno di stringere amicizia con ragazzi che vivono in condizioni completamente diverse dalla nostra, ma che in fondo provano le stesse emozioni e desideri e hanno la stessa curiosità e voglia di affrontare la vita.
Per noi adulti questa è stata un’occasione per confrontarci con altre persone che si prendono a cuore i ragazzi. L’esperienza è stata emozionante e ci ha confermato che occuparsi del bene, è una cosa condivisibile con tutti. Infatti, noi siamo una scuola privata cattolica gestita da laici e si è trovata in sintonia sul modo di prendersi cura dei ragazzi con una scuola solo in apparenza molto diversa dalla nostra. Anche loro sono una realtà privata, come noi, e quindi la spesa economica si può sostenete solo attraverso le rette e gli aiuti che noi chiamiamo “Provvidenza” e loro “Benefattori”.

Bravi ragazzi per questo bel diario; grazie per aver diviso con altri la vostra esperienza.
Vivo in Terra Santa da oltre trent’anni, parte della locale ampia comunita’ ebraica. Avrei un piccolo ma significativo appunto da fare, in merito all’esperienza che si riflette attraverso il vostro diario.
Come avete constatato, Terra Santa e’ una realta’ affascinante, complessa, a molte dimensioni, multiconfessionale. Ebbene, con quanti ebrei vi siete confrontati durante il vostro viaggio? A quanti israeliani avete chiesto una testimonianza?
In quella parte di Terra Santa che si chiama Israele c’e’ un ampia e viva comunita’ ebraica che parla italiano. La prossima volta che verrete quaggiu’, o che altri amici verranno come voi, potreste avere una esperienza piu’ completa dialogando direttamente anche qualche israeliano e non solo osservando da un lato ultraortodossi, soldati, etc. . Anche un solo incontro, una testimonianza, sarebbe meglio che niente….
La nostra mano e tesa, la nostra porta aperta.
